Fernando Alonso is confident of a good result on both Saturday and Sunday after topping the timesheets for second practice, despite admitting that he wasn’t pushing for a fast time.
“We did not concentrate on the times or anything,” Alonso said on Friday. “So it is always positive to see yourself in the first four or five positions, but today is not really important.”
The Spaniard isn’t getting carried away by his chart-topping times though, and still believes the Red Bull’s are favourites to take pole position.
“We also topped the practice in Monaco and then in qualifying Vettel was one second quicker than us – we know tomorrow is the day to put everything into it and we know Red Bull will be very strong and probably the favourite.”
Mark Webber’s isn’t so sure about being favourite after he admitted the RB7 needs more pace around the high-speed circuit.
“Fernando was quick but we need to get a bit more pace,” said the Australian. “It was not too bad. We drove around and are not quite quick enough yet.
“We were all on a pretty good level, McLaren and Ferrari as well. The pace is pretty close but we need to find a bit more pace at the moment.”
Outright pace might not be so important if the predicitions of rain for both qualifying and the race come true, something Alonso is fully aware of.
“The rain is forecast, tomorrow it is supposed to rain and especially Sunday so all the job we did today is maybe just for practice because everything can change for tomorrow,” he added. “We will stay focused and get ready for a change.”
