Sauber driver Sergio Perez suffered a major crash during the third session of qualifying in Monaco on Saturday.
The Mexican exited the tunnel off the racing line and appeared to lose the rear-end as he braked for the chicane. He then slammed into the wall before skidding into a second barrier.
It was the second impact which caused the most damage to the right side of the car which was completely destroyed.
Perez remained in the car for several minutes as the medical teams and marshalls ran to his aid. A wall of marshalls and blankets were used to block the view, but he was later removed and placed in the waiting ambulance.
The crash has similarities to Nico Rosberg’s during FP3, however the German had a lucky escape, missing the second barrier.
Reports that Perez is conscious and talking have been confirmed, but unconfirmed reports suggest he has a leg injury.
Update: Perez will remain in hospital overnight, he won’t compete tomorrow but the FIA has confirmed he is OK, no broken bones just minor concussion.
