Jenson Button says he expects McLaren to trail Red Bull and Ferrari at the first race in Australia, despite a better days testing in Barcelona.
The 2009 world champion finished the afternoon second quickest on day one, though Ferrari weren’t in attendance and Red Bull’s Mark Webber was quickest by over three tenths.
He believes it will be a big ask for the Woking-based outfit to finish ahead of the 2010 double-world champions and the Maranello team come the first race.
“I’ll be surprised if we can really match the Red Bull and the Ferrari when we get to Melbourne,” Button is quoted as saying by GPUpdate.
“I think that is a big ask considering the mileage that we have compared to them, and the pace in the last tests compared to them.
“I think that is going to be tricky. But never say never. I am quite impressed with the step that we have made with the car.”
