Red Bull team principal Christian Horner has reacted to the news that the Bahrain Grand Prix has been cancelled for now, calling it a shame, but he admitted it was the right decision.

“It’s a shame, but the country has got bigger issues than a Formula One race at the moment,” he said whilst in Barcelona. “It is important that they address those.

“At the end of the day we’re a sport and we can always go back there, if not this year then in future years.

“It’s a great shame not to be going, it’s always been an enjoyable place to visit, they’ve always made us feel very welcome, but understandably with the issues the country faces the responsible decision has been made and the first race will be in Australia,” he added.

In summary, the 37-year-old said: “So, disappointed not to be going but ultimately I believe it’s the right decision to be made considering what has been happening.”

Red Bull driver Mark Webber echoed similar comments when he discovered the news during testing in Spain. He believes the right decision was made.

“The right decision was made, in light of what is going on, so we look forward to Melbourne instead. It would have been nice to go to Bahrain, but hopefully it can stage the race again.”

Whilst he’s disappointed the season is slightly delayed, he has the added the benefit of starting the season in his home country, Australia.

“As for starting in Melbourne, it’s my home race and, as always, I’m looking forward to it,” he said. “It is a sensational event, we’re in good shape as a team, so I hope to go there and get a very good result.”
