Renault: Wins in 2011, not championships

Renault’s aim for the 2011 season is to be a regular ‘podium fighter’, says team principal Eric Boullier.

The Enstone-based outfit made a resurgence this year, claiming three podium finishes, the best of which came in Australia with Robert Kubica claiming second behind Jenson Button.

Boullier told the Renault podcast that wins and podiums would be achievable, but he wasn’t getting carried away with winning titles again just yet.

“The ambition for next year is to clearly be able to position our cars on the podium more regularly, which would allow us to grab maybe some wins.

“If we can put the team as a ‘podium fighter’ for the constructors’ championship I will be very happy.

“Eighth place last year, fifth this year, but clearly if we could be fourth – or even better in the top three – that would be very great,” he added.

Meanwhile, Boullier is hoping the teams decision to focus on their 2011 car earlier than most front-runners, as well as their previous experience with KERS, will give them a big boost at the start of the season.

“I think that we had a very early start for the new car and because we have, I hope, learned from the past mistakes, especially for the KERS, it should be promising and we should get some advantage by having very well prepared for the next year.”
