The 2010 season finale in Abu Dhabi last weekend drew in record TV audiences for the five biggest European markets.
Germany saw the largest viewing figures in three seasons as Sebastian Vettel secured his maiden title. Viewers peaked at a massive 12.1 million as the German driver crossed the start/finish line for the last time.
Italian broadcaster, Rai, saw their average audience top 10.6 million as Ferrari looked near certain to take another drivers’ title with Fernando Alonso. The figure was double the 2009 Abu Dhabi GP and was also the most watched F1 broadcast since the 2007 season.
Similarly in Spain, the home of Alonso, over nine millions fans were hoping the Ferrari driver would take his third title. It wasn’t to be as he failed to finish higher than fifth.
The British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) also recorded its largest average audience of the year, 5.3 million viewers with a peak of over seven million. Despite Lewis Hamilton’s slim chance of securing the title, the loyal fans tuned in to see the British based Red Bull team take their second.
Finally, France’s TF1 recorded a peak of 5.6 million viewers and an average of over 4.4 million – just behind the season opener in Bahrain.
