Jenson Button has conceded he hasn’t been as quick as his team-mate this season thanks to poor qualifying performances.
The Brit, who joined the team for this season, admitted Lewis Hamilton was more adaptable to the car, whilst his own style prefers a very stable set-up.
“Even if the balance of the car is not 100 per cent, Lewis can be very quick,” Button told the Independent. “I need a car that is more stable than he does. When the car isn’t right it makes me work very hard as a driver to get the car I want. In that respect Lewis is very strong.”
Button’s real issue has been qualifying form over a single lap. He’s often languished in the bottom of the top ten whilst Hamilton has started in the top five more often than not.
This is an area Button has been working on to improve recently and is evident with his performances in Italy and Germany where he out-qualified the 2008 world champion.
“Overall I think it’s been very close with Lewis. I out-qualified him at Hockenheim and Monza, and even when I don’t, within five laps I’m usually right behind him. But I am behind him, not in front. So qualifying is something that I still need to work on.”
