Alonso: ‘Webber deserves to be leading’

Fernando Alonso believes Mark Webber deserves the title lead as Formula One heads into round 15.

The Spaniard currently lies in third, 21 points behind Webber, partly down to a poor start to the season which has seen him make a handful of mistakes.

A jump start in China saw him take a drive-through penalty, whilst in Monaco, a heavy impact into the barriers resulted in him starting at the back of the grid.

He believes Sebastian Vettel has been in a similar position whilst Webber has been the most consistent driver, therefore deserving the championship lead.

When asked why Vettel wouldn’t take the title, he replied: “It’s a mixture of different things. The car has often let Sebastian down, he’s had some bad starts and a couple of accidents too.

“Mark, however, has surprised us all. He has driven the most consistent of us all, so he currently deserves the title lead,” he told Bild.

When he assessed his own opportunities, Alonso admitted he couldn’t afford to make any more errors, whilst Webber and Hamilton could possibly afford one more.

“Webber and Hamilton may be more relaxed and can afford another DNF. Vettel, Button, and myself have to drive aggressively to stay in the hunt, but at the same time we must not make errors.”
