Nico Rosberg hasn’t had the start to this season as he, and many others expected.
The move from Williams to Mercedes in the 2009 winter looked to have put the German in a promising position, possibly fighting for poles and race wins, however that hasn’t been the story so far.
A growing deficit of 53 points to leader, Lewis Hamilton, after nine races has led to the 25-year-old calling his car a “disaster”.
“The problem with the tyres is well known within the team. For weeks, we have said we would move forward but nothing happened – in fact we’re going backwards,” he told the Cologne Express.
To make matters worse, the team he left to join Mercedes managed to out-qualify and out-race the German team in the European GP.
“If one is twelfth behind both Williams, who were nowhere weeks ago, what can you expect from there? I went from Williams to Mercedes because I thought I’d have a car capable of winning.”
The team principal, Ross Brawn, admits the car isn’t good enough and has even hinted that the teams focus will switch to next year if a new aero package doesn’t do the job.
“We have not done our job well enough,” said Brawn.
“First we have to bring our new aero package up to scratch. Depending on how the results look, we will then decide if we will focus early on next season.”
