BMW-Sauber are set to drop ‘BMW’ from their team name in the coming weeks as reports suggest the F1 Commission met on Monday to discuss the matter.
Since BMW bought into the Sauber team in 2006, it has always been known as BMW-Sauber, however the German manufacturer dropped out of the sport in 2009. As a result Peter Sauber had to step in and save the team from folding.
That led to a deal between himself and Ferrari for the supply of engines, giving the team the rather odd and confusing name; BMW-Sauber Ferrari. It’s thought the ‘BMW’ part was kept as to not jeopardise the advertising revenues the team would receive from the ’09 season.
Visually, the team has begun to drop the BMW branding, displaying a large Sauber ‘S’ on the side of the car.
A final decision will be made by F1’s governing body.
