Sebastian Buemi suffered a scary and quite remarkable accident in first practice at the Chinese GP, which saw both his front wheels separate themselves from his car under heavy braking after the back-straight.
The car then skidded on it’s floor before burying itself in the gravel trap. Both tyres managing to jump the security fence and enter the spectator area – luckily, only a few thousand have attended FP1 meaning the grassy bank was near empty.
Toro Rosso confirmed, after investigating the accident, that a front-right upright failure, which is a new design introduced for this weekend, caused the accident.
The team will use upright’s of a previous design in FP2 to ensure the accident doesn’t happen again.
Jaime Alguersuari’s car was held in the garage throughout FP1 whilst the team investigated the matter, although he managed to make it out into FP2.
