F1 could return to Indianapolis in 2012

A spokesman for the Indianapolis Motor Speedway in the US, once the home of F1 in America between 2000 and 2007, has stated the sport might return in the near future.

After the 2007 event, the organisers, and F1 right’s holder, Bernie Ecclestone failed to reach a deal to keep F1 in America.

When asked in Bahrain if Indianapolis was the natural place for F1 in America, Ecclestone replied: “Yeah, it is. It’s only the fact that it’s all the wrong crowd and the wrong people and they didn’t really… nothing worked there really, we’d have to have a big change round. But we’d like to get back there.”

Chris Schwartz told the Indianapolis Business Journal that dialogue between the circuit and Ecclestone remain open, and the interest to reintroduce F1 is there.

“We continue to have dialogue with Formula One, and we’ve long maintained we’re interested in hosting their events.”

Schwartz admitted 2011 might be a long shot with F1 venturing into India in that year, but 2012 could be a possibility.

“2011 would be a long shot. Obviously, there’s a lot to consider.”
