Maverick Vinales dominates Thursday's pre-season test

Yamaha's Maverick Vinales dominated the second day of MotoGP pre-season testing in Malaysia, after a late effort put him 0.527 seconds clear of Suzuki's Alex Rins.

It was Vinales' Yamaha team-mate Valentino Rossi who set the initial pace at the end of the first hour of running aboard his factory Yamaha with a 1:59.625s to go close to two tenths clear of the field at that stage.

Andrea Dovizioso – who compared chassis on Thursday - would soon depose Rossi with a 1:56.562s, which would remain as the benchmark until the closing moments of Thursday's action.

Suzuki's Alex Rins finally usurped Dovizioso's time with a 1:59.424s with five minutes remaining, before Vinales moved the goalposts with a blistering 1:58.897 to end the day fastest.

Pramac's Jack Miller leaped up to third on his GP19 with a late 1:59.517s despite a tumble during the session, the Australian pushing Dovizioso back to fourth ahead of LCR's Cal Crutchlow, who came away unscathed from a fall at Turn 5 early in the afternoon.

Rossi was pushed back to sixth on the sister works M1, with Avintia's Tito Rabat just 0.039s further adrift in seventh on his year-old Ducati.

Wednesday pacesetter Marc Marquez once again limited his mileage due to his shoulder, though managed to complete a handful more laps today with 37.

Testing a new seat unit among other items on Thursday, Marquez ended the day eighth with a 1:59.790s ahead of Ducati's Danilo Petrucci and LCR's Takaaki Nakagami.

Johan Zarco improved on his Wednesday best by over a second on the KTM, and was fastest of the Austrian marque's runners in 11th, while team-mate Pol Espargaro was 17th after suffering an early highside at Turn 1.

Francesco Bagnaia was once again top rookie on his Pramac GP18, the reigning Moto2 champion 12th fastest despite an early tumble. Aleix Espargaro [Aprilia] and Sepang Racing duo Fabio Quartararo and Franco Morbidelli – who also crashed on Thursday – completed the to 15.
