Gustav Malja joins Racing Engineering for 2017

Gustav Malja has signed to race for Racing Engineering for the 2017 GP2 Series.

The Swedish racer tested for the team across the three-day post-season test in Abu Dhabi, where he set the fourth-best time on the final morning, and was officially announced as their driver the following week.

"I’m excited to join Racing Engineering for the 2017 GP2 season," said Malja.

"We began getting to know each other in Abu Dhabi last week, and I immediately felt very much at home. It’s a team with a long and successful history in GP2, and I’m convinced it’s the ideal place for my continued development as a driver.

"I’m also very pleased to have everything in place at such an early stage – it will ease preparations this winter and give us all some peace of mind.”

Malja's GP2 career began in 2015, racing for Trident in Belgium, before switching to Rapax for the Bahrain and Abu Dhabi rounds.

He was retained by Rapax for 2016, and it was with them that the Swede raced to 13th in the drivers' standings, taking back-to-back podiums in the Belgian sprint and Italian feature races at Spa and Monza respectively.

Racing Engineering finished second in last season's Teams' championship, with a brace of wins each for drivers Norman Nato and Jordan King, but neither driver have yet been announced to partner Malja.
