Maverick Vinales fastest on both days of Valencia MotoGP test

Maverick Vinales ended both days of the Valencia post-season MotoGP test at the top of the timesheets on his debut for Yamaha.

Vinales put in a 1m30.930 near the end of the first day to move to the top of the timesheets, finishing 0.020 seconds clear of his new team-mate Valentino Rossi.

Rossi emerged as the pace-setter in the morning but crashed at Turn 10, only returning to the circuit with 90 minutes to go.

Jorge Lorenzo made his official debut on a 2016 Ducati and ended the day third, putting in 39 laps in total.

He spent most of Tuesday towards the bottom section of the top 10 before moving up the order to go 0.122s down on Vinales.

2016 world champion and Honda rider Marc Marquez was fourth, ahead of Ducati’s Andrea Dovizioso – running the 2017 bike – and Cal Crutchlow. Suzuki’s Andrea Iannone was seventh.

On Wednesday, Vinales remained at the top of the order, this time putting in a 1m29.975 late in the day to move ahead of Marquez.

It was a disrupted day of testing, with an hour-long red flag from 11am after Suzuki riders Alex Rins and Iannone crashed at Turn 12 within a short period of time from each other.

Marquez also suffered a crash during the day, early in the afternoon, but he was able to continue. Dovizioso was third fastest, ahead of Iannone and Honda’s Dani Pedrosa.

LCR Honda’s Crutchlow and Yamaha rider Rossi were sixth and seventh, after putting in identical lap times. Part of Rossi’s programme included running Yamaha’s 2017 engine.

Lorenzo put in his final test outing for Ducati until the end of January and ended the final day of the Valencia test in eighth.
